Tim Hull - 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Team Member

So what do you do?
I'm the 'Chief Mechanic' for all of our Porsche Carrera Cup GB cars.

What have you been up to over the summer break?
I've been working at Motorbase. I did have a week off which was nice but someone's got to look after the cars in the break, and that someone is me! I also do work for Motorbase on Porsche road cars and that's kept me pretty busy too.

How long have you worked for Motorbase Performance?
I've been here since day one in November 2003. I used to be a mechanic in TVR Tuscan racing, through that I met David Bartrum and was taken on when he started the team. Over the years I've worked on touring cars and Porsches, but I've only been Chief Mechanic for the Porsches since the start of 2010, which is nice as they aren't as highly strung as the touring cars and are a little more mechanic friendly!

Best moment of the season so far?
Michael Caine winning at Brands in terrible conditions, and by a country mile against Tim Harvey. I am also very proud that we are leading the Teams Championship and have been for pretty much the entire season.

Worst moment of the season so far?
Michael Caine at Oulton park was a real shocker. He was on pole and the whole team really felt that one. Of course Steven Parish getting injured was another terrible incident, and because of it we've lost one of our cars and drivers for the rest of the season.

What's your favourite track?
Snetterton hold some great memories for me, I used to come here as a boy. My dad was a mechanic and he looked after Fiestas as well as Mike Smith's RS Turbo in the early 80s, I remember those days well so returning is always special.

How important is it to get on with the drivers and other team members?
It's possible to work alongside people you don't like but it's not healthy for the team and it's almost impossible to be successful. Motorbase well known for its team spirit, and I've always got on with all my drivers, mechanics, you name it. You're all fighting the same corner, you all share a common goal and you all love racing. It's not difficult to get on with people who are the same as you!

Do you have any advice for aspiring mechanics and racing fans who would like to work for a race team?
Don't! Only kidding, it's tough but you have to be prepared to start from the bottom, don't go in thinking you know it all because you won't!

My advice is to go to race weekends, talk to people from the teams and offer to help. Not there and then but back at there premesis, maybe on the weekends or evenings. Don't expect to be paid at first and be commited and enthusiastic. If you're any good you'll eventually get taken on, and then the hard work really starts.

All time favourite road and race car?
Road car has to be the 911 GT3, and my favourite racecar has to be Ayrton Senna's 1988 McLaren, the last of the turbo'd F1 cars.
