Jason 'Lance' Cornwell - 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB
Team Member
So what do you do?
I'm the 'Tyre Technician' and general dog's body! I am in charge of all the tyres for all six of our Porsche Carrera Cup GB racecars.
What have you been up to over the summer break?
I've had a baby! Well my wife has really, our second child, a little girl called Freya was born so I've had my hands full. Not much of a holiday!
How long have you worked for Motorbase Performance?
I've been here since the beginning in 2004. I used to work for David Bartrum valeting cars, when he started the team he brought me on board. I worked my way up, I began cleaning the cars and helped out where I could. Over the years I built up my experience around the tyre guys and eventually I took over. These days I'm in charge of the all the rubber on all six Motorbase Porsches.
Best moment of the season so far?
It's all been good and we've had a great season so far. Michael Caine's winning performance in the rain at Brands sticks out in my mind, as well as Ollie Jackson's drive, he made up places, went off, made up some more places, went off. There's never a dull moment here at Motorbase!
Worst moment of the season so far?
Michael Caine's DNF at Outlon Park was awful. He got taken out by Glynn Geddie on the first corner, we were on pole and I'm sure we'd have won that one had that never happened. The whole team was absolutely gutted, but that's racing.
What's your favourite track?
Oulton Park is my favourite as it's so picturesque. It has a great feel, a great crowd and there's always great racing there.
How important is it to get on with the drivers and other team members?
It's very important, you need to know everyone and how they react to different situations. Having a good atmosphere in the camp makes a big difference. It's that team spirit that makes people us all push ourselves, it also means you're quick to help each other out and muck in. That can make all the difference when you're racing, and it also makes it a great place to work.
Do you have any advice for aspiring mechanics and racing fans who would like to work for a race team?
Unfortunately it's a very difficult business to get into if you don't know the right people. It's very much who you know in this game and people tend to move from team to team. It's a bit like a big family.
If you're very good you can break in, but the truth is like me, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. Speak to as many people as you can on race days, ask questions and be willing to do anything.
All time favourite road and race car?
My dream car is an Audi RS6. I'm so familiar with the Porsche that I suppose if I had to pick a race car it would be the 911 GT3, just like we run in the Carrera Cup GB.
