News: Competing in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship and the Porsche Carrera Cup GB
The start of the second half of the 2007 motor racing season will take Kent-based Motorbase Performance team to the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire over the weekend of 14/15 July. While Steven Kane bids to tighten his grip on the Porsche Carrera Cup GB title, there will be a new driver for the team's BTCC squad.
Matt Allison and another driver (still to be confirmed) will handle the team's SEAT Toledos in rounds 16, 17 and 18 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, while the regular three-car squad of Sam Hancock, Steven Kane and Andy Britnell will contest rounds 11 and 12 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB.
There is change in the Motorbase BTCC squad following the departure of Gareth Howell. "The amount of accident damage we've had so far has put pressure on the budget," says team boss David Bartrum. "It's been difficult for every one in the team," Motorbase will continue to enter two cars, with Allison continuing his highly promising debut BTCC season. "We're delighted with Matt's performance and expect he will continue his excellent progress through the second half of the season," said Bartrum.
Discussions are in hand with several drivers regarding Donington and the balance of the season, and a replacement driver will be announced within the next 48 hours. "We will be a two-car team for the rest of 2007 and beyond," said Bartrum. "In the mean time, we wish Gareth well for the future."
In the Carrera Cup GB, Kane heads into the Donington weekend as the championship leader. He extended his lead to 16 points following a double win at Oulton Park last time out and is determined to press home his advantage going into the second half of the season. "I love Donington," says Steven. "It's one of the best circuits in Britain and I'm really looking forward to the races."
Kane will head to Donington fresh from racing in the Porsche Supercup race supporting the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last weekend, but now it is time to focus once again on the Carrera Cup title race, where just 22 points cover the leading three drivers. That's equivalent to one non-finish, so it's all to play for.
Meanwhile, Hancock will be bidding for his second podium finish of the season in the strong field. He's chasing Michael Caine for fourth place in the standings right now and showed at Croft that he has the pace to claim podium finishes. Donington will be one of the tracks he knows well, so hopes are high for a good weekend for Sam.
Britnell will spearhead the team's bid for glory in the pro-am category and scored a fine double win at Oulton Park last time out to narrow the gap to category leader Nigel Rice. Now, Rice heads Britnell by just 11 points and with ten races still to run, including two at Donington, the contest is wide open.
For those not able to be at Donington Park, the full Sunday race programme will be screened on the Setanta satellite channel. In addition, the third BTCC race of the day will also be broadcast live on ITV1, along with highlights of the earlier races, starting at around 2.30pm.
