Steven was born in Newtownards, Co. Down in 1980 and grew up on the family arable farm. By the time he was 14, Steven was competing in motocross races, using birthday and Christmas money to put together a bike and learning how to mechanic it himself. In 1995, 1996 and 1997 he won major motocross championships.
After leaving school and working an apprenticeship, Steven introduced himself to karting- selling almost everything he had to buy his first kart without telling his parents. In his first year, and after only being able to compete in the last four races, Steven won the Best Newcomer award.
In 1999, after his first full year, Steven won the Championship outright and was awarded Northern Ireland Kart Driver of the Year. All this was achieved with Steven acting as both driver and mechanic, making this feat all the more outstanding.
A tough decision was soon to present itself after Steven was introduced to single seaters. Working full time wasn't allowing Steven to concentrate on his driving. However, his father had noticed the commitment Steven had to his racing and became his major sponsor allowing Steven more time to practice. This paid off handsomely with Steven winning the Northern Ireland Championship and being voted Northern Ireland Race Driver of the Year in his first season.
Realising that he must look farther afield for experience, Steven joined up with Mackie Motorsport for the 2001 Junior Formula Ford Zetec season. Never having raced on any of the tracks before Steven won 8 races and came 2nd in four, selfishly taking 96% of all points available for himself. The icing truly decorated the already sweet cake of the season with Steven being voted the McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year for 2001. Steven then raced in F3 in both Britain and Spain before joining Epsilon Euskadi for the 2006 Renault World Series Championship and now moving into Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain for the 2007 season.
