What are the Britnell Brothers up to?
The Britnell brothers; a racing update
Brothers Andy and Gary Britnell have a long history with Motorbase Performance and their own racing plans are always inter-twined with those of the team headed by David Bartrum.
By their own standards, 2008 has been a relatively quiet season to date for Andy and Gary, but plans are being hatched to get back racing with the team later this season. In the meantime, Gary spends BTCC weekends working with the team in a roving capacity.
"It's something different and it gets me out of the house. It keeps me involved," said Gary at Snetterton recently. "I just do anything they want me to do. I look after the guests and I look after the grid girls as well, which is really tough!"
However, the brothers are dedicated racers and are now planning to race the ex-Marc Hynes Porsche 911GT3 Cup car, which is currently being rebuilt at Motorbase.
"The idea is to do some long distance races with it, with two other drivers. We'd like to so overseas events, including the Dubai 24 Hours in January," explained Gary. "Motorbase will run the car, of course. We would have done the Silverstone 24 Hours in September, but it clashes with the final BTCC event of the season at Brands. I've not done any racing yet this season, but I will be out in the Porsche."
Andy, however, has already done a couple of Britcar races in a mighty TVR run by veteran team boss Dennis Leech. "He's done a couple of races in the TVR and he can't stop smiling," said Gary, the older of the brothers. "It is an old Tuscan chassis, with a Sagaris body on it and a 7-litre Chevrolet engine, which is now producing 680bhp. It is a bit of kit." Andy currently shares driving duties with the car's owner Richard Stanton and Richard Hay.Also on the horizon is a foray into historic racing. "Now that we're getting on a bit, Andy and I really want to get a classic Ford Mustang for historic racing and go and have some fun!"
