News: Motorbase Performance Carrera Cup report, Snetterton: 28/29 July
Once again, the Motorbase Performance team was at the forefront of the racing during rounds 13 and 14 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB title at Snetterton over the weekend (28/29 July).
Despite fighting illness, Steven Kane took a second and a fourth place to further extend his overall championship lead, while Sam Hancock had his best race of the season to date with a mighty second place. With Andy Britnell taking two second places in the pro-am category to retain second place in the pro-am points' standings, it was a great weekend for the team.
Kane really felt the effect of his illness in the opening race and bravely finished the race in pursuit of winner Tim Harvey despite feeling very groggy over the final laps. "The first six laps I was flying, then I went over a kerb and lost the splitter. After that I had understeer from hell!" Mid-race, Kane came under great pressure from Michael Caine, but was able to hold his ground for second place.
Hancock, meanwhile, had been behind James Sutton on the opening lap, but a big move into Riches going into the second lap put Hancock fourth and he ran much of the race on the tail of Caine to take fourth place.
In the pro-am category, Britnell just lost touch with leader Nigel Rice on the opening lap when Charles Bateman went off at the Esses. "He came across the grass and nearly hit me and I had to come right off the throttle," said Britnell. Once the gap to Rice was established, it stayed at around four seconds for much of the race.
In Sunday's round 14, Kane was again in splitter trouble and he was soon struggling to match Harvey's pace. "I lost the splitter through the chicane on the second lap and after that I was just hanging on, with big understeer everywhere," said Kane.
He soon came under attack from the chasing pack and it was Hancock who starred by fighting through to second. First he bravely dived ahead of Caine round the outside into the high-speed Riches Corner, then edged ahead of Kane two laps later to take second. Sam drove a fine race to score his best Carrera Cup result to date in second. "That felt like a long race," said Sam. "It's absolutely fantastic and I really owe this result to the Motorbase team." Despite coming under fierce attack from James Sutton, Kane held on to score fourth place and extend his points' advantage.
Britnell again took second in pro-am, but only after he withstood race-long immense pressure from Bateman. "I really had to work for that," said Britnell. "He was mega on the brakes into the Esses."
Now, with six races remaining, Kane has extended his overall lead in the championship from 19 to 28 points. It's not time to start celebrating just yet, but it is certainly looking good as Motorbase prepares for the next two races back on home ground at Oulton Park (18/19 August).
