Collard Steps up to Remote Control Challenge
August 2nd 2009
HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship
Snetterton, Rounds 16/17/18
After qualifying for the HiQ MSA Touring Car Championship at Snetterton the Airwaves BMW team got down to some serious racing - with remote control cars.
Star driver Rob Collard was joined by some of the team's trusty garage crew to battle it out on the high-tech mobile track provided by www.theracingbug.co.uk in the merchandise trade area at the Norfolk circuit.
While Collard is an expert behind the wheel of a full-size BMW 320si Touring Car, the BTCC ace found handling a miniature version of his race car a tougher task.
He was given a lesson in remote control racing from Airwaves BMW mechanic Alex Steele, who proved to be the class of the field as he notched up a win and a second-place finish in two closely contested races.
Airwaves BMW Team driver Rob Collard said:
"It was great fun taking on the rest of the guys and the track was really good. I didn't manage to get a win but I wasn't last either, and I think there was a fair bit of cheating going on. Some of the driving standards were shocking. You would never have got away with some of the moves the other guys were pulling on a real race track, even in the BTCC!"
